The Paw Paw Lake is nestled deep inside the countryside of Southwest Michigan and gets its waters from a 3Km long Derby drain. It is surrounded by rich natural greenery of the grape vineyards and gold courses and is one of the largest freshwater lakes of Michigan.
The Lake is just two hours away from Chicago and one can conveniently take a train from the Chicago Union station to Kalamazoo Amtrak Station to easily reach the lake. Tourists who come from the side of Detroit normally take cars and cover a distance of 158 miles.
Visitors throng this area to have a glimpse of winemaking and for playing golf and the lake water rich in nutrients provides good fish catching experience. The 900-acre lake full of good quality water helps in the thriving of the fish population. One can easily find Carp, Crappie, Largemouth bass, Sunfish, Yellow perch and Northern Pike here.
In most areas, the water reaches a maximum depth of 90 feet and one can easily find fish in the drop-offs/ weedlines surrounding the shores of the lake. Even beginners will find it easy as the normal baits and lures are capable of fetching good catches here. Fishers focus on points below and above water for a good catch which is not feasible in other lakes of Michigan. The east and the west shores are the best places for shore fishing and one has to ensure that the spot does not have nooks which help the bass anglers to escape.
For fishing in the lake, one should have completed 17 years of age and need a valid Michigan fishing license. The license is issued even in electronic form and valid from March 1st of a year to March 31st of the next year. Residents can buy the license online by providing a copy of valid Michigan driving license and voter registration card.
Fishing is allowed from dawn to dusk and it is convenient to use a pier or boat for fishing though many choose to do shore fishing also. Rainbow trout are stocked in huge numbers during April and fishing tournaments are held throughout the year. The lake has yielded various award-winning fishes huge in size- Bluegill and Longnose Gar to name a few.
Though the lake offers a good catch-all over the year, the best time for fishing would be summer. Fishing experts say that during summer, the calm and warm water helps in getting fishes that reside in shallow as well as deep areas of the lake. People even without perfect fishing skills can get bucket mouths weighing an average of 2 to 3 pounds.
People visit here with families as the place provides an ideal vacation by offering festivals like peach baking contents and car shows. Besides, there is an animal park and Deer forest which is closely located and offers ample camping and trekking adventures. Beautiful homes and condominiums are available for tourists to stay all around the year.
