SPECIES INFORMATION

Peacock bass belongs to the genus Cichla and it is a freshwater species. You can find more than 15 species in this genus. Few of the species are Orinoco peacock bass, speckled peacock bass, blue peacock bass, spotted peacock bass, butterfly peacock bass, etc.

Peacock Bass is both food wish as well as game fish. Florida attracts many anglers, particularly for exotic peacock bass. This Peacock Bass is a beautiful and hard-fighting game fish. It is an aggressive eater and vicarious in nature.

Fishing in Florida is legal for few peacock bass species; however, it is illegal to fish Speckled Peacock bass. Many new anglers find it hard to fish this Peacock Bass due to its aggressive nature. A proper fishing technique is necessary to catch this exotic fish species. You can use different fishing tactics. While fishing in the canals, you need to look near the bridges, culverts, and holes to spot peacock bass. When you are able to locate small bait fish or birds in those places, they are the hotspots for the predators to catch.

Floating Minnows is the ideal one to use for fishing. It is hard to catch these species using plastic worms. This peacock bass will hit the crank baits or jerk baits for sure. Lipless Crank baits are also effective to fish peacock bass. You can try Dahlberg divers, Clousers, zonkers, poppers, etc. for Fly-fishing. You can enjoy fishing in Florida all through the year. However, in-between February and May you can spot beautiful butterfly peacock bass weighing around four pounds.

SIZE

These species are differentiated on the basis of color and range; however, the various species are similar in meristic. Among them, the Speckled Peacock Bass is the largest species in the genus Cichla. It weighs around 13 kg and it is 3.3 feet in length. Other species in this genus are quite smaller. You can also preserve these species in the aquarium. However, few smaller species of peacock bass require large tanks.

RANGE

Both butterfly peacock bass and speckled peacock bass are non-native species in Southern America. You can find different species of Peacock bass in Florida. You can spot these species especially in Miami, Sunrise, Tamarac, Everglades and Coral Springs, Broward Counties of Florida State.

HABITAT

Almost all the peacock bass species lives only in freshwater lakes. Actually, the peacock bass is a native of the Amazon River and live in warm water. It finds it hard to live under the temperature below 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Florida thus becomes the ideal place for Peacock bass to flourish. Peacock bass is widely spread more than a hundred miles in the canals and lakes of Florida.
