These are widely found in Basswood Lake, Minnesota which is just a 90 minutes’ drive from Praire portage. Often travelers who come from Ontario take a seven hours flight to cover the distance of 566 km.

Anglers can find rich stocks in Blanchard, which is located 376 miles from Kansas City. People who visit this place from Oklahoma can reach within half an hour.

Americans living in the East coast can catch these in the great Sacandaga lake, which is just three hours and a twenty-minute drive from New York. This lake is surrounded by pleasant greenery and gets its waters from the Sacandaga River. There are few other lakes like Harwood lake and Cold spring near New York which stock Black Bream in huge quantity where it is also known as Porgy.

SIZE

One can catch an average size of 5 to 300 m depending on the stage of its lifecycle. The mature adult is 60cm in size, which is the maximum and regarded as a huge catch. Usually younger one’s weight around 2kg and ones which have crossed ten years can easily weigh 3-6 kgs. Though the flesh is of high quality and tastes sweet when caught from freshwaters, these have a comparatively slower growth rate. A younger fish takes five years to mature, and these can live even up to 27-288 years easily.

Schools of black bream can be found in spring near Victoriahoursand they grow in estuary areas. The Gippsland lakes, Mallacoota inlets, and Tyers Lake are thickly crowded with these fishes.

HABITAT

DIET

These feed on gilt-head bream and dentex besides consuming a wide range of prey. In the rivers, they eat crustaceans like crabs, amphipods, prawns, and copepods. Small fishes like anchovies and gobies can be consumed easily by them as they have sharp teeth when they reside in the upper reaches of the river they feed on freshwater fauna, hardyheads, and mollusks. Commonly gastropods and insects are used to lure them. Minnow lures and soft plastics are used frequently by anglers to catch these. Ghost shrimp, prawns, crabs, and beach worms are the best baits for finding these.
