Cero Mackerel

SPECIES INFORMATION

Anglers can find a vast population of Cero Mackerel in Lake Peck, Florida. There are various lakes which stock these in the US, yet Lake peck has the majority population. This lake is located in Martin County and can be reached by 2-3 hours drive from fort pierce. This lake is a significant reservoir of river Missouri is surrounded by the lush greenery of Prairie hills and plains.

SIZE

These are bluish-green on the backside with silvery lines on the side of the belly. On average, it grows up to 36 inches weighing around 10 Ibs, and a record of 22 Ibs is reported. The female fish ranges from 12 to 72 cm live by ten more years than the male fishes. It is a type of ray-finned bony fish and anglers prefer it for the quality of the meat as it is less oily than the other kind of mackerels.

RANGE

These fishes prefer waters with 20-29 degrees C temperature and are found mainly in South Florida, Massachusetts to Brazil, the Bahamas to Carribean sea. It is widely found along the east coastal area of the US from the Cape Cod area to the Yucatan Peninsula. Once the school is comfortable with the type of water they stay, they do not try to migrate to more considerable distances. It is a rare type of fish when compared with Spanish Mackerel and hides well under the reef barriers. In Miami, during October and November, it is the peak season to catch these. Anglers prefer live chumming of the reef patches to get a good catch.

HABITAT

There are various types of Mackerel, and these are found in considerable numbers in coral reefs inside water bodies and on oyster bars. During warm weather, these can be seen onshore in the surfs and nearer to shore areas. These have the best combination of sharpest teeth and powerful vision and live in schools. It is easy to find them in groups over grass beds and reef walls. The fish is quite aggressive, and hence anglers usually prefer to use good quality fishing equipment for catching these.

DIET

Fast trolling baits are usually used by anglers to catch these which include small fishes, squids minnows, sardines, mullets, greenbacks, live shrimp, etc. Lures like silver spoons, chuggers, plugs, and white jigs are used commonly. Even cut fish or dead shrimps can be used to attract them. Under the water, these fishes feed naturally on herring, menhaden, and jacks.
